The Internet to enable sustainable development

The past thirty years have seen tremendous growth in the capabilities and reach of information and communication technologies (ICTs). The Internet, especially, has become a critical enabler of social and economic change, transforming how government, business, and citizens interact and offering new ways of addressing development challenges. It has also transformed education by creating a new culture of learning and accessing information.

There is no doubt that the Internet has immense potential to improve the quality of education, which is one of the pillars of sustainable development. While it is important to remember that the Internet is not, of course, the answer to every challenge posed by education, it can help to unlock human capabilities that can improve learning and teaching.

This article aims to highlight the power of the Internet to enable education, as well as the challenges that are being faced to make the most of it. In order to show this, we will share a case study from a project in Pakistan and we will introduce policy recommendations that could be considered when discussing these issues.

The Internet and Education

THE INTERNET AS AN EDUCATIONAL TOOL

For many commentators, the Internet has always been an inherently educational tool. Indeed, many people would argue that the main characteristics of the Internet align closely with the core concerns of education. For instance, both the Internet and education are concerned with information exchange, communication, and the creation of knowledge.

Thus, in light of the Internet’s capacity to allow these activities to take place on a vast and almost instantaneous scale, the educational implications of the Internet are understandably often described in grand terms. Take, for example, this recent pronouncement from Jeb Bush:

The Internet isn’t just a powerful tool for communication. It’s arguably the most potent force for learning and innovation since the printing press. And it’s at the center of what is possibly America’s mightiest struggle and greatest opportunity: How to reimagine education for a transformative era.

Beyond such hyperbole, the implications of the Internet for education and learning can be understood in at least four distinct ways. First, is the potential of the Internet to offer individual learners increased freedom from the physical limitations of the real world. This is often expressed in terms of reducing constraints of place, space, time, and geography, with individuals able to access high-quality learning opportunities and educational provision regardless of local circumstances. The Internet is therefore portrayed as allowing education to take place on an any time, any place, any pace basis. Many commentators extend these freedoms into a transcendence of social and material disadvantage, with the Internet perceived as an inherently democratizing medium. The ability to support freer and fairereducational interactions and experiences is seen to reflect the Internet’s underpinning qualities as “a radically democratic zone of infinite connectivity” (Murphy 2012, 122).

Broadband has had a powerfully transformative and positive impact on education. As the internet advances and technology innovates, the forward momentum continues. Beneficial changes are still happening as a result of technological innovations and advancements in internet deployment, bandwidth and speed.

Respondents to a Pew Research study found that 92 percent of teachers said the internet has had a major impact on their ability to access content, resources and materials. Improved access to information is just one of the many trends being observed in education.

Here’s a deeper look at four ways broadband has enhanced the educational experience.

The student-teacher connection is stronger

One of the internet’s greatest strengths in the classroom is the ability to connect teachers and students. With a lesson plan that integrates technology, teachers can open up their classrooms to a wealth of knowledge and educational resources. As students have access to personal devices, study materials, interactive lessons, educational quizzes and tutorials all can be enhanced with digital resources.

Class websites give students the ability to download assignments, study materials and watch supplemental videos. A classroom blog can serve as a study guide, homework aid or resource for a lesson recap. With email and messaging apps, students can interact with class members, share their work progress, ask questions and access additional learning resources.

The growth of the Internet in the world provides many opportunities to many people around the world in many different ways. When students are considered, the use of the Internet is mainly for social and entertainment purposes. However, it is very obvious that the Internet provides not only social connection and entertainment, but also academic and scientific information as well. Additionally, the Internet can be used as a tool to learn the latest news all around the world as well as getting any kind of information that serves different purposes such as learning more information about a hobby or health. Therefore, it can be said that the Internet is the source of spreading information quickly to a large audience and of going beyond the limitation of time and space. In the light of the above information, it is vitally important to encourage students to use this invaluable source to get any kind of information they need in their academic studies. For the reasons mentioned above, the aim of this study is look at the students‟ use of Internet in their academic studies. The participants are around 150 English Preparatory School students in Eastern Mediterranean University. These students have come from different countries in order to study at various departments in the university. The study is carried out in the Spring Semester of the Academic Year 2010-2011.
