Pahela Baishakh is the first day of Bangla year. Bangalees celebrate this day with traditional festivities across Bangladesh and India. Pahela Baishakh is a unique and distinctive festival to the people of all classes and religions.
On this day, the traders open ‘Halkhata’ the new account book of the business offering sweets to their customers. The traditional events of Pahela Baishakh are to eat Panta-Hilsa, to arrange Baishakhi Mela, Bali Khela, Nagordola, Puppet show etc. These events are held in both rural and urban areas. People wear traditional dresses like Panjabi and Sari. Children wear new colourful dresses. In Dhaka, different cultural organizations arrange different types of programs on this day. The day’s first program begins from Ramana Batamul. Bangla Academy, Sishu Academy, Shilpakala Academy, Bulbul Lalita Kala Academy arrange cultural programs including singing songs, arranging drama, dancing etc. Fine arts institute of Dhaka University brings out a mass procession named Mangal Shobhajatra at the dawn of the day.

The first day of Bangla New Year is called Pahela Baishakh. In keeping with the age-old tradition we celebrate the day with traditional festivities. The day’s first programme begins at Ramna Batamul organised by a leading cultural organisation ‘Chhayanat.’
To observe the day rural people arrange traditional games, dramas and cultural functions throughout the country. On the occassion, a large number of people throng together in some specific places. The places are decorated colourfully. So, these places wear a festive look.
All around, there prevails a festive mood in the people’s minds. In many places, fairs are also held. The fairs get very much crowded. However, people enjoy these fairs much. Shopkeepers open ‘halkhata’ and urban people observe it in a befitting manner.
Wearing traditional dresses they attend the cultural functions arranged by various socio-cultural organisations. People bring out colourful procession carrying festoons, placards, posters, banners and wearing masks. Young people appear to be more interested to celebrate the day. They wish one another saying “Happy New Year”.
They participate in band music and dance together. However as a special day for the Bangladeshis the significance of the day is very great.
